Dear Juliet, Romeo is into you

After completing Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare I though it was great that we finally got to see the two main characters Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time.

While reading this I felt as though Romeo meeting Juliet was good timing for him because he can finally move on from the girl that broke his heart Rosaline. It was good to see Romeo happy after meeting Juliet, seeing as though he started Act 1 moping around, being a depressed teen and being hopelessly in love with someone who doesn’t love him back. But in all fairness we should thank Romeos cousin Benvolio for pushing him to go to the Capulet feast so Romeo could “Compare her face with some that I shall show, And I will make thee think thy swan a crow” (1.2.93) as to show Romeo that there are other beautiful girls out there, maybe even more beautiful than Rosaline.

Well Benvolio should keep playing Cupid because thanks to him Romeo did find someone else, he found someone who’s beauty was “too rich for use” (1.5.54). After meeting Juliet, Romeo starts to think that he’s never seen “true beauty til this night” (1.5.60). So it’s safe to say Benvolio was right in saying that once Romeo saw how beautiful other girls are, he’ll start to think his swan Rosaline was actually a crow compare to everyone else.

After this interaction I think that on the way home Romeo’s would be blasting “You and I” by One Direction.

This would be Romeo’s song of choice because he’s a romantic at heart and this is a romance song. He would also listen to this song so it can motivate him to be with Juliet. For example the lyrics “You and I, we don’t wanna be like them” can be represented by how they both don’t want to be like their warring families they just want to be free to love, and to not let them being each other’s “foes” (prologue) get in the way of that. The ending lyric to the song “we could make it if we try, You and I” can also help Romeo be more determined because if they try they just might work out.

This is all wishful thinking though because we all know from the prologue that this love story will end with the death of both Romeo and Juliet, but we’ll think about that when it comes, for now we’ll just have to enjoy the happy moments they’ll have.
